The Angry Imam

“It is dangerous for us to go,” said Stephen, “We cannot avoid the dangers, but when we think about what Jesus has done for us, we know that God will help us, and we are not afraid.”

Stephen serves with unfoldingWord’s Church-Centric Bible Translation partner in Chad, where 15 million people haven’t heard the gospel yet. Generous financial partners are equipping local church networks like his to translate the Whole Bible for their Whole Nation. In Chad and many other countries, God is using unfoldingWord’s carefully selected Open Bible Stories to reach Muslims like never before.

Stephen and his friends travel many dangerous miles to visit villages for community checks of the first-ever translation of Open Bible Stories (OBS) from French into the people’s language. This people group is often in the news for their violence against Christians.

News travels fast in a village. Soon, about 25 people, including their imam, assembled in the small building, expecting to be offended by these Christians. “Their faces were very serious and angry,” said Stephen. “Outside were several teenagers, and inside were several young men waiting for a signal to stone us or kill us. But they listened and listened to the Bible stories, and slowly, their faces changed. They calmed down. When we reached the end, the imam stood up and exclaimed, ‘If anyone says that Jesus is not the savior, he is not a real Muslim, and he should be stoned!’”

“I bless the name of the Lord for unfoldingWord and Open Bible Stories,” said Stephen. “This instrument is inspired. We are sowing seeds in the hearts of Muslims that are like bombs, and one day they will burst into life. It helps us reach Muslims like nothing ever has before.”
